P-38 History

It made it s maiden flight on 27th January 1939. During its production dozen prototypes were built. It was built because of a need of high altitude fighter. It was highly maneuverable, had high-altitude capabilities and a flight of nearly 12 hours with external fuel. Army Major Richard I. Bong had 49 aerial victories in the P-38 which made him the highest scoring ace of America. Japanese Admiral Yamamoto was also drowned by these P-38s. The final versions wee used as photo-reconnaissance in Europe and Far East.
